I am a certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapist, and I offer this approach to nearly all my individual therapy clients. I am so passionate about how helpful this modality can be! EMDR is based in the Adaptive Information Processing model, which recognizes that past experiences deeply impact our current ways of perceiving the world. When we experience something as overwhelming for our nervous system, be it childhood abuse, a car accident, or a traumatic birth, our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and sensations become linked to that memory. In therapy we identify those painful memories and triggers related to them and then reprocess them through bilateral movements (eye movements or bilateral tapping). The power of this seemingly simple therapy is incredible. I have seen EMDR work beautifully at helping trauma triggers (like a knee-jerk response to a certain smell) lose their power, at building new adaptive belief systems, and reframing past experiences in a new light. EMDR has been well-researched and shown to be remarkably effective as a treatment for trauma, anxiety, depression, and much more. As a certified EMDR therapist I have extensive training, consultation, and experience in working with the modality and many different forms of trauma.
